Graveyard Keeper 2 Battles: Squads, Defense Power, and Mercenaries
Battles are the biggest new system in Graveyard Keeper 2 — the first game had no combat at all. Fights are squad-based: you field a squad of zombies whose defense power stat decides how they hold up, and mercenaries can plug the gaps for wages that climb with the inflation mechanic. Here is how the system fits together and how to survive the early fights.
How you unlock battles
Combat arrives through the story rather than a tech tree purchase — you cannot opt in early, and the first fight catches most players underprepared. Before the story reaches the battle trigger, make sure you have a usable squad: corpses processed into zombies (the Reanimation Liquid craft is the key ingredient) and assigned to the squad. See the recipe list for its runes.
Zombie squads and defense power
- Your squad is zombies. The corpses you bury by day can fight by night — squad capacity and quality depend on the zombies you have raised.
- Defense power is the number that matters. It aggregates your squad’s strength; if a fight feels unwinnable, the answer is usually more or better zombies, not better reflexes.
- Zombie quality carries over. Perks and the organs that went into a zombie’s creation influence what it contributes — the same autopsy decisions that improve graveyard quality also shape your army.
Mercenaries and inflation
Mercenaries let you field a full squad before your zombie production catches up — but their wages scale with the inflation mechanic, the same economy system that punishes flooding vendors with raw goods (see the money guide). Treat mercenaries as a bridge, not a strategy: every silver spent on wages is silver not going into your graveyard.
Tips for the early story fight
- It is an objective run, not an arena. In the first fight the goal is to reach the gate — you do not need to kill everything on the way.
- Stay near the surviving guards. Let them tank; trailing behind the group keeps you alive far more reliably than charging ahead.
- Do not chase enemies into side areas. Pulling extra fights before the gate is the most common way the early mission goes wrong.
- Eat before you fight. Energy management matters in combat as anywhere else — start the fight with a full bar (see the beginner guide).
Is the combat good?
Community reception is mixed: many players find the story fights serviceable but the combat missions rough, with ranged play in particular feeling weak compared to melee. The practical takeaway: build your squad numbers first, lean on melee in the early missions, and play the objective instead of the enemies.
